Leadership SEO Example — 250-Word Statement
At SEO assessors look for a team leader who sets direction and raises the standard of the whole team's work. Show how you improved a system, built an inclusive culture, developed team members, and stayed visible under pressure. Evidence should cover a whole team, months rather than days, and results with clear numbers.
Example statement
SI managed a customer-service team of 12 handling around 300 contacts a day. Our daily huddle had turned into a read-out of statistics nobody used, and engagement and fresh ideas were visibly fading across the team.
TI wanted to rebuild the huddle so the team owned it themselves and used it every day to improve the service.
AI asked the team, anonymously, what was useless about the huddle and what would actually help them do their jobs. Using their answers, we co-designed a ten-minute format: one lesson from yesterday, today's priorities, and one improvement idea. I rotated the chairing so a different team member led each day, and I coached the first few chairs privately so they felt confident standing up. I introduced a short wins slot where we recognised good work by name. Every improvement idea went on a visible board, and I made sure each one got a yes, a no with a reason, or a trial date, so people saw their ideas lead somewhere real. I kept the performance statistics available on the wall but stopped them dominating the conversation. After a month I reviewed the whole format with the team and we agreed two further changes, including a weekly theme suggested by one of the quieter members of the team.
RWithin two months the team had implemented 25 of their own improvement ideas. Average handling time fell 8%, customer satisfaction rose six points, and two other teams adopted the format for their own huddles.

Why this scores well
- At SEO assessors want visible team leadership that improves how the whole team works; rebuilding a failing huddle into a team-owned tool does precisely that.
- The writer leads through the team rather than around it: rotating chairs, coaching quietly, closing the loop on every idea, which shows maturity at this level.
- Results show service and people impact together: 25 ideas implemented, handling time down 8%, satisfaction up six points, adoption by two other teams.
What SEO level requires
| Grade | What assessors expect |
|---|---|
| HEO | At HEO, leadership means leading a small team or project day to day: giving clear direction, supporting individuals' wellbeing and development, and keeping people performing through pressure. |
| SEO ← this page | At SEO, leadership means visible leadership of a whole team: setting direction, managing performance fairly, building an inclusive culture, and improving how the team works over time. |
| Grade 7 | At Grade 7, leadership means leading across teams and functions: translating strategy into clear direction, developing other leaders, and keeping people confident and delivering through change. |
Common mistakes at this level
- Telling a one-off story of a single busy day, when SEO assessors want sustained leadership of a whole team over weeks or months.
- Imposing a change on the team without consulting them, which undermines the inclusion assessors score at this level.
- Claiming culture change with no mechanism, such as rotating chairs, visible idea boards or feedback loops you actually ran.
Frequently asked questions
At SEO it means leading a whole team visibly: setting direction, improving how the team works, managing performance fairly, building inclusion, and developing people. Assessors expect examples spanning weeks or months, not single shifts, with evidence you changed a system or culture and results measured in service and people terms.
HEO leadership is about running a team day to day: briefings, support, feedback and getting through pressure. SEO adds the systems layer: redesigning how the team works, building culture, leading through others, and showing your changes lasted. If your example is one busy week, it reads as HEO; SEO examples show sustained improvement.
It is strongly advisable. Fairness and inclusion are central to how the behaviour is assessed at this grade. Show how you shared opportunity or unpopular work fairly, consulted the team, acted on feedback from quieter members, or supported different needs. It must be concrete: what you changed, not just what you believe.
