Leadership HEO Example — 250-Word Statement
At HEO assessors expect you to lead a team, not just coordinate tasks. Show how you gave clear direction, supported individuals through difficulty, developed someone's skills, and kept standards up under pressure. They look for fairness, honest feedback and visible presence, backed by results measured in people and performance terms.
Example statement
SI was the senior chef de partie in a busy hotel kitchen running 200-cover services. Two chefs resigned in the same month at the height of the season, leaving the brigade seriously short.
TUntil replacements arrived, I had to keep every service running at full standard and hold a tired, worried team together.
AI sat down with the head chef and we simplified the menu so the remaining team could cook it well under pressure. I redesigned the section plan each day around who was on shift, and I trained a talented commis chef to step up to the sauce section, showing her one new dish per day. I introduced a 15-minute briefing before every service so everyone knew the plan, the bookings and the pressure points. I rotated people through sections to spread skills and keep things fair, and I made sure breaks happened even on the worst nights. I checked in privately with two colleagues I was worried about and adjusted their shifts to help. I gave honest feedback at the end of each service, including praise where it was earned. When we recruited, I ran the trial shifts myself and built a structured first-week plan, so the two new chefs settled in quickly and stayed.
RWe covered six weeks without cancelling a single service, and complaints about food fell by 30% compared with the month before. The commis chef was promoted to chef de partie, and both new chefs passed their probation.
Use this as a model, not a script. This is an original example written for this site. Adapt the structure to your own experience — copying it word for word risks plagiarism and will not reflect your evidence.
Why this scores well
- HEO leadership means keeping a small team performing through pressure; covering a six-week chef shortage without cancelling a service demonstrates exactly that.
- Shows the full HEO range: direction (daily briefings, section plans), development (training and promoting a commis chef) and care (protected breaks, private check-ins).
- Strong, specific outcomes: complaints down 30%, a promotion created, and two new chefs passing probation under the writer's onboarding plan.
What HEO level requires
| Grade | What assessors expect |
|---|---|
| EO | At EO, leadership means taking ownership of small pieces of team coordination: organising other people's work, keeping the team focused on shared goals, and setting a positive, fair example. |
| HEO ← this page | At HEO, leadership means leading a small team or project day to day: giving clear direction, supporting individuals' wellbeing and development, and keeping people performing through pressure. |
| SEO | At SEO, leadership means visible leadership of a whole team: setting direction, managing performance fairly, building an inclusive culture, and improving how the team works over time. |
Common mistakes at this level
- Describing project delivery without ever showing the people side: no support, no feedback, no development of team members.
- Claiming to support the team with no concrete example, such as a private check-in, adjusted shifts or defended breaks.
- Hiding behind the senior person, for example my manager decided and I implemented it, which scores as EO at best.
Frequently asked questions
At HEO they expect you to lead a small team through real work: setting direction before a busy period, supporting individuals who struggle, developing skills through coaching or delegation, and giving honest feedback. The strongest examples show both the people side and the performance side, with a result that covers both.
Yes, if you led a team in practice: running a shift, leading a project team, supervising temporary staff, or keeping a service going through a shortage. Say clearly what responsibility you carried, who looked to you for direction, and what you did for them. Acting leadership shown honestly beats a title claimed vaguely.
At HEO the focus is your own team and the day-to-day: briefings, workload, support, feedback and keeping services running. At SEO, assessors expect you to shape how the whole team works over time: improving systems, building culture, and leading through other people such as team leaders. Pick the example that matches the advert's grade.
