Working Together SEO Example Statement (250 Words)
At SEO, assessors want collaboration across organisational boundaries. Strong examples show you bringing together people with competing priorities, designing how they will work together, resolving real tension and leaving something sustainable behind. Your role should clearly be the person who made the collaboration work.
Example statement
SLast winter, referrals to our council's welfare team jumped by a third, but food parcels depended on a food bank, a housing association and a supermarket, none of whom worked together.
TI proposed and led a multi-agency packing day to clear the waiting list and build a joined-up way of working.
AI invited the three organisations to a planning meeting at the food bank and opened by asking each to name one thing stopping them working together. The food bank feared losing control of donations; the housing association worried about data sharing; the supermarket wanted predictable collection times. I addressed each concern directly: I drafted a simple data-sharing agreement with our information governance team, mapped collection slots around the supermarket's delivery schedule, and agreed the food bank would keep final say on parcel contents. When two agencies disputed who should lead, I reframed the day around the families we were serving and suggested I coordinate since the council held the referral list. I recruited 40 volunteers from all four organisations, paired people from different agencies on each packing line and briefed everyone together on the morning. During the day I tracked the referral list on a whiteboard so every agency could see progress and I redeployed volunteers to the slowest lines.
RWe packed 520 parcels in one day and cleared the waiting list, cutting the average wait from six days to two. The four organisations now meet monthly, and the packing day ran twice more with the same agreement.

Why this scores well
- True multi-agency collaboration at SEO level: four organisations with conflicting interests, each concern addressed individually.
- Reframes a leadership dispute around the families being served — a mature influencing move assessors reward at this grade.
- Hard numbers (520 parcels, waits cut from six days to two) plus a monthly forum that outlasted the day itself.
What SEO level requires
| Grade | What assessors expect |
|---|---|
| HEO | At HEO level, Working Together means taking the lead in making collaboration happen: organising people across teams, valuing different perspectives and resolving disagreements so shared goals are met. |
| SEO ← this page | At SEO level, Working Together means building collaborative relationships across teams and partner organisations: creating the structures, trust and shared purpose that let groups with different interests deliver together. |
| Grade 7 | At Grade 7, Working Together means leading collaboration across organisational boundaries: building partnerships, aligning senior stakeholders with competing interests and creating collaborative cultures, often without line authority. |
Common mistakes at this level
- Presenting consensus as easy rather than showing the patient work that created it
- Ending with a one-off event and no lasting mechanism or relationship after it
- Speaking for partner organisations without showing you understood their interests
Frequently asked questions
Through design. Show that you built ways of working where every group could contribute: pairing people across organisations, consulting before deciding, rotating chairs, publishing shared notes. Inclusion at SEO is about the structures you create, not a statement that you value everyone equally.
It can be, if the collaboration outlives it. The strongest SEO examples end with something that continued: a standing forum, a shared system, a partnership agreement. If your example was a single event, show the relationships and mechanisms you built that are still running afterwards.
You can, but angle it differently. For Working Together, emphasise trust-building, inclusion and handling disagreement. For Leadership, emphasise direction and decisions. Rewrite the Action section for each behaviour so the assessor sees the specific behaviour they are scoring, not a generic story.
