Leadership SEO Example Statement (250 Words)
At SEO assessors look for a team leader who sets direction and raises the standard of the whole team's work. Show how you improved a system, built an inclusive culture, developed team members, and stayed visible under pressure. Evidence should cover a whole team, months rather than days, and results with clear numbers.
Example statement
SI led a museum visitor-services team of 20 permanent and casual staff. A major new exhibition was forecast to double our visitor numbers over a three-month season, our busiest period on record.
TMy job was to prepare the team so that every visitor still had a calm, safe and welcoming experience under that pressure.
AI forecast demand week by week and built a rota that mixed permanent and casual staff fairly, with the quieter shifts shared out as well as the busy ones. I recruited six casual staff a month early and trained them properly before the crowds arrived, pairing each one with an experienced colleague. I wrote a one-page busy-day plan covering queues, breaks and escalation, so nobody had to guess under pressure. I held a short briefing every morning and was visible on the floor during peak hours, helping where the pressure was highest rather than staying in the office. I protected breaks and ran informal debriefs so people could let off steam and raise worries. I asked for feedback weekly and changed the queue layout twice as a direct result of what the team told me. I recognised effort constantly, from handwritten thank-you notes to naming people in the staff newsletter, so the whole team felt seen.
RWe welcomed 95,000 visitors over 12 weeks without a major incident, and visitor satisfaction reached 92% in the exit survey. Nobody resigned mid-season, and all six casual staff accepted contracts to return the following year.

Why this scores well
- Preparing 20 staff for a record season shows SEO-scale leadership: planning, fair resourcing, training and welfare across a mixed permanent and casual team.
- Visible, inclusive leadership runs through the actions: morning briefings, working the floor at peaks, weekly feedback acted on, and constant recognition.
- Big, credible numbers: 95,000 visitors without a major incident, 92% satisfaction, zero mid-season resignations, six returning contracts.
What SEO level requires
| Grade | What assessors expect |
|---|---|
| HEO | At HEO, leadership means leading a small team or project day to day: giving clear direction, supporting individuals' wellbeing and development, and keeping people performing through pressure. |
| SEO ← this page | At SEO, leadership means visible leadership of a whole team: setting direction, managing performance fairly, building an inclusive culture, and improving how the team works over time. |
| Grade 7 | At Grade 7, leadership means leading across teams and functions: translating strategy into clear direction, developing other leaders, and keeping people confident and delivering through change. |
Common mistakes at this level
- Writing about the service outcome only, with nothing about how the team was developed, supported or recognised.
- Presenting yourself as the hero who fixed everything, which reads as poor delegation and weak team leadership.
- Using results that predate your involvement or belong to the wider service rather than your team.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Managing a customer-service team, a museum front-of-house team, a retail store team or a large volunteer operation can all demonstrate SEO-level leadership. Map the scale honestly: team size, budget or visitor numbers, and how long the example lasted. Assessors score the leadership behaviours, not the sector they happened in.
Team-level metrics: satisfaction scores, handling times, absence or turnover, error rates, visitor numbers, ideas implemented. Pair at least one service metric with one people metric, for example handling time down 8% and satisfaction up six points. Numbers should be honest approximations from your own records, not invented precision.
Usually 250 words per behaviour, though some SEO adverts allow 500, so check the job advert carefully before writing. In 250 words, keep Situation to two sentences and Task to one, then spend around 150 words on your Actions and finish with a Result of about 35 words containing at least one clear number.
