Developing Self and Others Grade 6 Example Statement (500 Words)
At Grade 6, assessors look for development as strategy. Show capability you built across a division or profession: programmes you sponsored, pipelines you shaped, barriers you removed at system level. Evidence of influencing across organisational boundaries — and numbers at that scale — separates 6 from 4.
Example statement
SI directed a division of 130 specialist advisers spread across six locations. A capability review I commissioned after two high-profile quality failures found our advisers' technical knowledge was patchy and ageing: no shared standards, no accreditation route, and learning dependent on whichever manager you happened to work for.
TI took personal ownership of rebuilding the division's professional capability over two years: common standards, an accreditation pathway, and a knowledge system that did not depend on geography — while keeping our delivery commitments on track.
AFirst I set the standard. I convened our nine most respected advisers — not the loudest — and over three months we defined what competent looked like at each level, testing drafts against real cases. Publishing the standard was contentious; two office leads felt it implied criticism of their people. I visited all six locations to explain it was a floor we would build from, not a judgement, and adjusted two sections where practitioners showed me the wording missed legitimate local practice. Next I built the pathway. I negotiated a partnership with a professional body so advisers could gain accreditation through assessed workplace evidence rather than classroom attendance — essential for a dispersed workforce. I funded it by redirecting spend from a conference programme the data showed delivered little, which meant defending that cut to colleagues who enjoyed those events. To build momentum, I ran the first accreditation cohort with 20 volunteers from the two most engaged offices, then published their results and their own words about what it changed, which created demand from the other four. Then I attacked the geography problem. I established a community of practice for each specialism, meeting monthly by video with rotating chairs, and a peer-review scheme where advisers reviewed each other's casework against the standard. To seed trust, I had my own decisions reviewed first, in front of the division. I tracked capability as a management metric: quarterly sampling of casework against the standard, accreditation numbers, and error rates, reviewed at my leadership meeting alongside finance and delivery. When two offices treated the pathway as optional, I linked completion to their team objectives rather than punishing individuals, which brought both offices on board within a quarter. I also wrote the standard into induction and into our recruitment criteria, so the bar would outlast me. Throughout, I kept learning myself: I completed the same foundation accreditation I asked of others, and passed on my second attempt after failing the first — a fact I shared openly at divisional briefings.
RTwo years on, 84% of advisers hold accreditation, casework quality failures fell from 11 a quarter to 3, and the professional body has cited our workplace-evidence route as a model it is offering to other organisations. Adviser survey scores for development rose from 38% to 72% positive, and four community chairs have been promoted into leadership roles. Our reliance on external consultants for specialist reviews dropped by half, saving around £90,000 a year.

Why this scores well
- Diagnosis-led capability strategy (a review after quality failures) spanning six locations and 130 staff, with the writer completing the same accreditation and sharing a failed first attempt.
- Shows system building: standards co-created with practitioners, accreditation via workplace evidence, communities of practice, capability tracked as a management metric.
- Handles resistance like a senior leader: visiting all six offices, funding by cutting a conference budget and defending it, linking completion to team objectives.
What Grade 6 level requires
| Grade | What assessors expect |
|---|---|
| Grade 7 | At Grade 7, Developing Self and Others means championing learning across a business area: building a culture where development is planned and protected, growing future leaders, and aligning skills with what the organisation needs next. |
| Grade 6 ← this page | At Grade 6, Developing Self and Others means building capability at organisational scale: sponsoring development programmes, shaping succession pipelines, and making learning part of how the organisation runs. |
| SCS | At SCS, Developing Self and Others means role-modelling continuous learning across the organisation, setting the talent and capability strategy, and creating the conditions for other leaders to grow. |
Common mistakes at this level
- Metrics limited to attendance and satisfaction, not capability or career outcomes
- Missing the resistance: senior stories without obstacles read as invented
- No personal development thread — even at Grade 6, self-awareness is scored
Frequently asked questions
Capability and career outcomes, not bums on seats: participants promoted or placed, critical roles with credible successors, retention of talent, internal fill rates, professional accreditations gained, capability scores before and after. Attendance and satisfaction are supporting detail, never the headline.
Yes, in a sentence or two. Senior descriptors retain self-development, and it strengthens credibility: a capability you built, feedback from the board or peers you acted on, reverse mentoring you took part in. It also models the culture you are asking the organisation to adopt.
Usually 500 per behaviour, occasionally 750 — the advert governs, and it varies by department. Spend the words on diagnosis, stakeholders and outcomes. If you find yourself describing the programme brochure, cut and replace with what you decided, influenced and measured.
