250-word behaviour statements
Many Civil Service adverts set a 250-word limit per behaviour. Here is how to hit the limit without losing marks.
Four short paragraphs. Situation and Task together can be ~60 words; Action ~130; Result ~40.
Recommended shape
- Draft freely in STAR.
- Count words with the word counter.
- Cut context before cutting actions.
- Replace vague verbs ("helped", "supported") with specific ones ("scheduled", "negotiated", "redesigned").
Check the advert
Some campaigns use character limits instead of words. Civil Service Jobs will state which applies. Do not assume 250 words if the advert says otherwise.
